Welcome

Welcome to Realface.com, the social network for the spiritually curious -- a "Facebook for seekers," you might say.  The name is taken from the Zen koan, "What was your face before your parents were born?  What is your real face?"  And so the site is aimed at those of us who are engaged to one degree or another in the search to discover the true nature of self and reality.  Questions like, "Who am I really?" and "What's really going on here?" have become increasingly more insistent in our lives.

The search for a final answer leads down many roads as we turn over every rock looking for clues, and all the while our daily lives challenge us to maintain balance, authenticity, sincerity -- "right living," as Buddha would say.  It's a daunting task, one that requires guidance, help, teachers, friends.  Hopefully, this site will be a useful resource in that regard.

We're new, having just launched in March 2010, so it's a great time to join and help shape this site into what you'd like it to be for you.  Welcome!

New Groups

groupSelf Inquiry Discussion Group

The Self Inquiry Discussion Group (SIG), located in Raleigh, North Carolina, provides an opportunity to meet with others involved in the search for Truth and Self-realization. Our meetings consist of an informal and open discussion of paths, teachers, techniques, philosophical and spiritual systems, and possible ways and means for expediting the search. The discussions are not academic or theoretical, but rather focus on our own personal experiences as seekers. There is usually also a period of silent meditation at some point during the evening.

Most people who continue to come to our meetings are not concerned with "Why should I seek Self-realization?" but rather, "What is the best way to go about it?" There is a paradox in that we use words to talk about that which is beyond words, and although there is often talk of paths and things to do, there is also general agreement that the best approach is subtractive. That is, rather than try to accumulate more spiritual and worldly knowledge, to doubt the truth of all you think you already know.

If you find yourself drawn to teachers like Nisargadatta Maharaj, Richard Rose, Ramana Maharshi, Douglas Harding, Tony Parsons, Franklin Merrell-Wolf, Eckhart Tolle, Adyashanti, and the ancient masters of Zen, Advaita Vedanta, and Christian Mysticism, you may find our meetings worthwhile.

This Realface group is also open to anyone who can't make the meetings but would like to participate in group online discussions.
